A short film of my 2019-23 nine-panel frieze ‘Nonaptych Of My All-Too-Human Visions’, telling the complex story of its conception as a series of sketches in 2010, being re-animated as a new series of artworks in 2019, and finally being re-conceived in 2022-23 as a single multi-panel artwork unified by the abstract figure design present on each panel.
This frieze explores deep-seated and foundational visionary experiences that have ‘lived’ within me for many years, a idiosyncratic sense that some visions, some experiences run so deep, that they can dwell within my body, running through my blood and animating my life in all sorts of deep-seated and transformational ways. It’s a subjective feeling, but an important one for me.
The process of creating this frieze also charts many life changes, not least a re-examination of my arts practice as one increasingly oriented towards creating large-scale artworks. If ‘Nonaptych Of My All-Too-Human Visions’ started out life as sketches, then a series, it soon gathered itself together as a unified frieze. The film tries to capture all of this long and winding journey.
