A simple piece, depicting the celebrations after a successful harvest. Frescoes at Knossos and elsewhere commonly show in a lively style female dances but at this distant remove, it is difficult to apply meanings or functions to them without recourse either to contemporary agrarian societies or to speculation. One thing is clear, however: evidence from frescos suggests that on ritual occasions at Knossos, there was a segregation of the sexes. There appear to have been dances performed by women for mixed audiences or for women only – thus, as the three women dance in this piece, the men beyond the wall can only watch and celebrate from afar.
