Having never painted murals on walls before, I wanted to take a small dividing wall and educate myself on transfering my canvas-painting skills onto a larger format with a different paint medium. The Swift People image, as a magical intention of prosperity and transformation for the people of Melkhoutfontein, seemed like an appropriate start point, and I used this wall to develop several idiosyncratic but practical techniques for rendering figures in movement in an authentic way which captured the tension of leaping and flight. Warren & Surita both seemed very happy to be the first to receive a mural: the local kids also seemed to delight in watching the sideshow of an artist at work when they were on their way home from school!
