This drawing illustrates some of the stranger aspects of what we currently understand about consciousness, in particular Dennett’s ‘Multiple Drafts’ model of recursive neurological computations being responsible for the perceived unity of a Cartesian theatre. Here we see a human figure out of whose head emerges pictorial representations of strange loops and twisting chaos forms from which an emergent order – the three eyes at the top – can be seen as symbolising the subjective experience of consciousness. Surrounding these are the multiple perceptual drafts slowly rising to meet the same three eyes.
