This simple mandala is based largely on the cosmogonies expressed in the mythologies of Plains Native American peoples. Dominated by a central mountain which concretizes the landscape of the world into being, we see the green and fertile sunrise in the spring season in the east (right). This develops into a reclining summer figure in the south (below) surrounded by bounty such as crops and sustenance, and then a red fiery sun-devouring animal in the west (left). Finally we see the cold north wind (above), and the image is bisected by the Milky Way traversing the sky-earth. Thus, this image is a calendar as well as a cosmogony.
