This piece expresses artistic self-transcendence and the 'otherworldly' sensations often experienced in painting by referencing the famous Flammarion Engraving, produced for a 19th century French book about the history of meteorology, but now popularly used in occult, mystical and metaphysical circles to suggest the real existence of some 'higher realm' accessible by mystical or visionary practices. I have chosen to focus on the lower left side of the engraving and emhasise a psychological aspect, that what is commonly mistaken for an external 'otherworld' is in truth the vast inner vistas of the unconscious mind which are closed to conscious awareness and introspection. Note particularly the landscape depicted in the subject's mind: what seems 'out there' is rather more 'in here'.
