A fundamental feature of human nature across all cultures and all times appears to be a curiosity for the unknown, and for exploring beyond the boundaries of the self. In 'Liminal Contact' I propose this as a fundament not only to religion and spirituality (and the latter may be conceived without requiring the supernatural) but also to artistic practices in general as well as the more specific context of painting. Such explorations reflect "ubiquitous desires to engage outside the boundaries of one's ego, to move outside what is known, and to extend beyond the customary or the everyday..." and to move into domains of the novel, the surprising or the transcendent. Here these propensities are evoked by situating the artist magically dancing and expressing herself in an imagined 'otherworld' from which the old world of the everyday can be distantly seen via the portal through which she entered this new domain. The magical aspects are emphasised in the UV image.
