"THREE WANDJINA"
2008 : 60cm x 20cm : Acrylics, markers, sand & grit on canvas

Among the Aboriginal peoples of Arnhem Land in Australia, there is the powerful motif of the wandjina, creator spirits whose likenesses are depicted on a number of rock art sites. The rock art itself is regularly repainted by tribal elders and land custodians; this repainting permits the creative power of the wandjina to increase, which in turn aids in producing the next generation of animals and human children from which, ultimately the next land custodians will emerge to repaint again these rock forms. Inspired by this idea of the creators being strengthened by the created, who in turn create the creators, I decided to create this work. Shown are three wide eyed wandjina in the act of creation.
