: introduction :
Welcome to the :: salviaspace :: project website. This is work inspired by and directly drawn from experiences with the Mexican hallucinogenic herb Salvia Divinorum, also known as Ska Maria Pastora, La Maria or Pipiltzintzintli. Here you will find visual art, poetry, music and stills from animations projects, as well as information on a forthcoming book, and a shop where you will be able to purchase art prints and music CDs.
The menu above aids your navigation through this site.
The salvia leaves below move you forward and back through the menu order.
Unlabelled salvia leaves at the top of some pages also move you through the menu order.
My name is Bruce Rimell and I live in Yorkshire in the north of England. I was lucky enough never to experience the adolescent doubt that 'all myths are lies' which is common in our society. Instead, I managed to keep some kind of animistic core belief - all things seem alive to me, and I do feel very lucky to feel that way. It's also true that this sense helps me interactively understand the entheogenic experiences that salvia can offer.
My approach to salvia has always been that of an artist (rather than a scientist, a shaman or entheonaut), and this approach allows me to offer independent insights into the salvia experience which other people often connect with. My intention with salvia however, is to seek knowledge: self-knowledge and knowledge of the nature of realities which do not often present themselves 'outside' of salviaspace and salvia-related experiences. It is also my intention to document the experiences in visual, musical and poetic forms, and draw from and integrate these experiences and teachings into my life. Salvia is an unusual entheogen, engendering both stillness and chaos in the same experience, and my work on this site has attempted to capture at least something of this paradox.
Bearing that paradox in mind, in my visual work particularly, I have attempted to be balanced in my use of psychedelic and non-psychedelic artforms. Many people associate psychedelia and repetitive patterns with hallucinogenic experiences, but with salvia my experience has been that such phenomena have not always been the primary focus. It must be said that I don't really think for a moment that these images have successfully captured the experiences, senses, perceptions and emotions that salvia can grant us. They should be more appropriately regarded as useful lies which act as a signpost to the truth of the matter. Those who know will probably understand, and those who don't might just be interested. Or not... life is sometimes like that.
