"BADON"
2007 : 59cm x 42cm : Marker on card

The city of Bath, Somerset, is a profoundly striking city for me and the presence of the Roman Baths and Hot Spring (originally sacred to Sulis Minerva) brings the place alive for me. This piece is an expression of that life, but also details something of the movements of water coruses around, above and under the city. Flowing from the base of the piece up towards the icon of the goddess Minerva at centre top is the hot water bursting forth from the earth to make the spring. We see it move through the Roman Baths complex and thence to the River Avon flowing from right to left across the image. Additionally, rain is shown as falling at the top of the piece, completing the water cycle within the city. People familiar with the city of Bath may also recognise the Royal Crescent, Pulteney Bridge and the railway line depicted as sets of footprints.
