(*1) - A fuller discussion of Leary's Eight Circuit Model of Consciousness can be found HERE or HERE.
(*2) - Remember the Blur lyric? 'Girls who are boys who like boys to be girls who do boys like they’re girls who do girls like they’re boys - Always should be someone you really love'
(*3) - Although it has to be said the noise of the music meant that the answers to these questions sometimes were: 1. What? 2. Can't hear you, and 3. Yeah, fantastic!
(*4) - If you live outside Europe, or were never a clubber, 'hardcore' is extremely strong porn. To me, it will always be crazy cartoon music played at 200bpm to the sounds of a massive crowd hedonistically screaming their heads off in joy.
(*5) - It was reckoned that in the UK alone more than 1.5million pills of Ecstacy were being consumed every single weekend.
(*6) - Yeah, okay. I played with a lot of go-go boys around that time. I was a go-go boy around that time. There's a part of me that still is. Actually we all were - every shirtless male clubber was a hot go-go boy, and every naked female clubber was a hot go-go girl too. It was very hard to resist that tactile love, but then there weren't really any morals to stop us. At least, none that we would listen to.
(*7) - Some clubs used have corners where you could go paint yourself with UV colours and then dance under the UV lights. Other clubs had seating areas with flashing light machines for you to trance out, or primitve VR games. And of course computer games helped us to chill out the day after.
(*8) - Watch that episode of the Simpsons where Homer eats the hottest chilli pepper in the world, the 3D episode or where Homer falls asleep while driving and the whole road turns into a floating-angels-bed-aaah scene. That's us talking. See the same thing in just about any of Danny Boyle's films (he is from Scotland) but especially 'The Beach'. Us again.
(*9) Think 'Achtung Baby' and 'Zooropa'.
