:: reconstructing a large visionary artwork - a visual journal ::

In the winter of 2000-2001 I began a large format piece invoking the Inca god Wiraqocha, based on imagery from the Tiwanaku (Tihuanaco) civilisation some centuries prior to the Incas. Wiraqocha as a deity had a profound effect on me when reading Inca mythology, being as he was a god of the sun, the sky and storms, as well as evoking the mysteries of the jaguar in his face. As a teacher of the arts of civilisation, I felt he was an excellent subject for an art work, and this piece was originally intended not to reproduce but to invoke and to offer respect to this deity as a profound archetype of the human being to aspire to.

However, as often happens in life, other things barred the way to completion of this work and in the spring of 2001 I abandoned it and placed it into storage.

But in winter 2007 I chanced across this piece again in rather a dilapidated state and feeling a bit sad, I have decided to complete it following in part the original vision of Wiraqocha I had had in 2000 and in part a sense of the deity which is more in keeping with my modern visual style. This journal follows the process of the reconstruction, repair and re-visioning of Wiraqocha in a series of photographs plus commentary.

I intend to complete this piece and produce a maximum of ten limited edition canvas prints of this work for sale. Until then please click on Wiraqocha's eyes to begin the journal.
