"FIVE MOUNTAINS"
2007 : 84cm x 59cm : Inks & markers on card

This piece was created for an open exhibition on the theme of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. During my life I have been to a number of such sites, both famous and obscure, and indeed I live very close to one of them (the model village of Saltaire), and grew up next to another (Avebury). I decided to pursue an ancient theme which I explored a little in They Came Out Of The Lake And Built A House and Central Mountain - the idea that the world is framed and supported by mountains of the five directions (north, east, south, west and the centre). This work, then, maps out that idea on a global scale using five mountains from the World Heritage List. The Mountain of the North is depicted as Castle Rock in Edinburgh, while to the east we have Koyasan (the home of Shingon Buddhism) in Japan. To the South is Uluru or Ayers Rock in Australia and to the west we have Teotihuacan's Pyramid of the Moon in Mexico. Finally the Mountain of the Centre is Kilimanjaro (or Kerinyagga) in Tanzania, a site close to the origins of man and so deeply relevant as a central mountain.

First Prize Winner in the 2007 Saltaire Festival Inspired By World Heritage Open Art Competition
