"FLYING FOX"
2006 : Inca Sky detail
The flying fox was located over the entrance to the Land of the Ancestors in Incan understanding - between Sagittarius and Scorpio - and features in the introductory myth to the essay The House Of The Sky in which he runs up a mountain to escape a flood but gets his tail wet. This again refers to the large scale movements of the sky that the Incas observed to be happening. As Fox slipped into the water, the entrance to the Land of the Ancestors was being blocked by the rising floodwaters that the myth spoke of. For this reason, we see fox's tail and back paws and marked with water and the fox is trying to leap away northwards (to the right of the picture) to escape the flood. |
