"INCA SKY"
2006 : 300cm x 52cm : Digital print on cotton satin

The full image, which shows the entire Incan conception of the Milky Way and the dark cloud constellations therein. I find it most interesting that where most cultures use stars - sources of light - to coordinate themselves in the sky, the Incas used clouds - absences of light - to form shapes which aided their astronomy. As well as the dark cloud representations, this image also features three 'conventional' star-based constellations which were adopted by the Incas when the Spanish outlawed all pagan ways including astronomy. Note that they are located at the three most important points of the sky: the puma (the edge of the Incas view of the summer sky), the Southern Celestial Pole (at centre) and the fox (the entrance to the Underworld).
