:: visions of ancient skies ::

One of the remarkable things about the sky is that human understandings of the sky and its various features correspond across vast distances and times in quite astonishing detail. Thus, the Babylonians for example conceived of Venus as a young maiden, as did the Incas some 4000 years later. Similarly, the Sumerians understood the sky to be divided into three parts: The World Above, This World and the World Below (corresponding to the northern sky, the ecliptic and the southern sky respectively). The Aztecs and Maya seemed to have the same understanding some 3000 years later.
