"HONI THE CIRCLE DRAWER"
2006 :
59cm x 42cm : Silver pen on card
There's an old Jewish legend about a man named Honi, who went out into the desert and drew a circle around himself in the sand, and vowed not to leave the circle until God had granted him the power to perform miracles. In this piece, I have depicted him as in the act of completing the circle. Notice, however, that the line which forms the circle (or in this case a rounded rectangle to fit the format of the card) is also the line which forms Honi, who is himself drawn with a single continuous line. Thus, Honi is both the circle itself and within the circle undiffierentiated from it. |
