"THE FALL OF THE BULL"
2006 : 40cm x 28cm : Acrylics, sand & grit on canvas

The style of this piece was a considerable departure for me: depicted is the constellation of Taurus at the moment when the Earth's precession meant that it no longer held the position of the vernal equinox. We can see the Twins (aka Gemini) watching from the East, and in the West, the Sun begins to leave the constelation via the Bull's horns. This piece thus records a moment in human mythical history which goes back to 2000BC. For me, equally interesting to the subject matter here is the technique I used to create this piece, which enfolds grit and sand in the acrylic paint background to create an effect similar to primitive rock art and pottery textures. The colour scheme selected is derived from the blood red and sandy colours commonly found in Minoan pottery from the island of Crete...
