"PETRONUNAC"
2006 : 42cm x 59cm : Digital print on semi-gloss paper
The Nunak people are a recently contacted tribe of the Colombian Amazon who excel in rock art of a deeply shamanic nature. However, there are barely 400 of them left, since the ongoing civil war between the Colombian government and paramilitary groups has displaced them from their land and exposed them to measles and influenza - diseases for which they have no immunity and are often therefore fatal. It strikes me as sad that the modern world should ride roughshod over their subtle traditions and idyllic lives without much thought, and this piece was composed as a tribute to them. May the Nunak people regain their strength and live on! |
