"THE SEVENTH"
2006 : 59cm x 42cm : Inks & markers on card

This uses simlar techniques and imagery to The Wedding Feast - in fact these two images are complementary. Here, however, the basis for the image is the creation myth of the Dogon people of Mali. They tell that in the beginning, there were eight ancestors at the beginning of time. The Seventh One took the longest to be born and was endowed with special powers. The Seventh is thus depicted as in the creation myth - still gestating deep within the earth under an ants' nest while the other ancestors await hir arrival. The Nummo Twins can be seen hovering above the nest, which is surmounted by a dog (a reference to the Dog Star which is sometimes said to be important in Dogon cosmogony).
