"THE WEDDING FEAST"
2006 : 59cm x 42cm : Inks & markers on card
I was inspired here by the svelte forms of sub-Saharan African rock art, particularly some of the figures found in the Kalahari desert. I have depicted what I consider to be a wedding feast of the planets at the marriage of the Sun and Moon. Each planet is shown by some defining characteristic, and so we have, from left to right: Mars (bearing a spear), Saturn (head beringed and wearing a crown), the Sun (with a bright crown of Sun rays), Venus (with her straggly hair), the Moon (wearing a crescent head-dress) and Mercury lying on the floor with a serpent at his heels. Jupiter is missing from the image, but the image is dominated by the texture of the sky, and since Jupiter and the sky god were one and the same, we might consider him present in a more subtle way. This piece forms a set of two with The Seventh. |
