"...Please put a penny
in the old man's hat.
If you haven't got a penny,
A ha'penny will do..."

Day 2224th February 2005 So, my question this morning was this: Given that the Lucky People (whoever they may be) are watching over me, when will I find the penny they have given me? I was absolutely sure that they would guide my eyes to the penny, or that they would guide the penny to me, but it didn’t look hopeful.

For a start the road was still covered in snow (more had fallen during the night), and the pavement was very obscured. I felt my hope start to dwindle as I left the red zone, and by the time I reached the blue zone I was resigned to not finding a penny. Had the Lucky People not be around today? Did they fail me? Did I not believe strong enough?

I looked down…and smiled. There on the road, right on the edge of the blue zone, was a shiny new penny! Thank you, Lucky People!

Result – One penny coin found in the blue area.

Day 22’s penny –Year 2004 – very shiny, but slightly dented on face and edge – average condition

Day 23 25th February 2005 Well, what a super-lucky day. I was approaching the experimental area when I began to turn my mind towards finding pennies and thought of the Lucky People. I started to imagine what they might look like and a picture developed in my mind.

Then I looked down as soon as I entered the red zone, and there was a one penny coin. Okay, so I picked it up…barely ten metres later, my eyes fell on (or were guided to…) a two pence coin. You may remember that 2p coins are in scope as they appear similar to (though slightly larger than) 1p coins. Again, I picked that up and started to smile.

Again, within ten metres, I found another penny-looking coin. When I looked more closely I saw that it was smaller than a 1p coin and it turned out to be a one cent coin – that is a Euro cent, rather than a US dollar cent. I turned it over and found that it had come from Portugal , which is a bit synchronous as I have been reading about the Portuguese language lately…

Hmm….what are the Lucky People trying to say?...

Result – One penny coin, one two pence coin and one euro cent, all found in the red area.

Day 23’s coins – One penny coin: Year 2001, slightly shiny, average condition – Two pence coin: Year 1999, slightly shiny, average condition – One euro cent coin: From Portugal, year unmarked, not shiny, good condition.

And just for curiosity value, I ended up drawing that picture of the lucky people that I had in my mind. Here they are, in full glorious Technicolour…

Well there’s been a lot of penny finding since the last diary entry – I haven’t had time to update it recently, so here goes with a fair few entries. I have also decided to abandon the experimental area as I am now finding large amounts of pennies everywhere…

********

Day 24 28 th Feb 2005 One penny found – Year 1980, not shiny, average condition. Lucky People involved I think…

Day 25 1 st Mar 2005 Two pennies found – Year 1988, cracked and dirty, very poor condition and year 1995, dirty average condition. I became convinced I would find one or two pennies in a certain area (the old experimental blue zone) outside one of the shops in the morning, but as I scanned, they didn’t materialise. However, on doing a second scanning in the evening after work, they were exactly where I had predicted them…thank you Lucky People!

Day 26 2 nd Mar 2005 One penny found – Year 2002, very shiny near mint condition. This one definitely caught my eye because of the shine. Strange, but I’m sure I dreamed of a shiny penny last night…lucky people again?

Day 273 rd Mar 2005Two ‘coins’ found – One was a 2p coin, year 1979, not shiny, average condition, and one was a small piece of metal, copper coloured and exactly the same size as a 1p coin. I figured it should be in scope as on the floor it looked exactly like a penny…maybe the Lucky People don’t worry about telling the difference…

********

It’s about at this point where the Lucky People hypothesis gets a little strange. It stops being a hypothesis and kind of starts to become a proper belief. I start thinking about the Lucky People even when I'm not scanning for pennies and wonder what else they might be able to do. I therefore stop scanning for pennies with any hypothesis in mind, but still the pennies come a-flowing…

Day 28 4 th Mar 2005 Three pennies found – The first was in the experimental area (red zone), right where I stopped to cross the road: year 2001, very shiny, mint condition.

The second two were on the reception desk at work – I usually have to lean over to get a set of keys from behind the desk, and there they were literally right in front of my eyes. Strange really, as I didn’t see them as I was leaning over, but only when I was up close to them…maybe they didn’t just pop into existence right in front of my eyes, but it did seem that way. Hello again, Lucky People?

Of these two coins, the top one was year 1998, shiny and good condition, and the bottom one was year 1988, not shiny, average condition.

Day 29 – 7 th Mar 2005 Two pennies found – Another group of two, this time outside the door to my office…strange…as if they were waiting for me to arrive. Thing is, it was a busy corridor and no one else seemed to notice them…

The first was year 1988, not shiny and average condition, the second was year 1997, slightly shiny and also average condition.

Day 30 – 8 th Mar 2005 Three pennies found – A single one and yet another group of two.

The single one was found in a scan of the experimental area, and was year 1989, not shiny, rough and slightly poor condition.

The group of two were practically beneath my feet when I stepped forward to get on the arriving train in the morning to take me home from work. Naturally, it was a bit difficult to stop and pick them up, but pick them up I eventually did…lost any chance of a seat on the train though.

The first of these was year 1999, shiny, average condition and the second one was year 1988, not shiny, also average condition.

Day 31 – 9 th Mar 2005 One penny found – This one was waiting for me when I got on the bus. I almost never get on a bus, but as I boarded I saw that the penny was right by someone’s foot in the gangway. I felt a bit cheeky picking it up, but ignored people’s stares to do so.

Year 1989 – not shiny, average condition.

********

Strange to say but I think recently pennies have been put in slightly strange places so that I have to work (day 30) or ignore society rules (day 31) to gain a penny…Lucky People again, or is somethi9ng else happening?

Personally, I’m starting to believe I am a Penny Magnet and that’s the hypothesis I shall be using next…
