"SATURDAY"
2004 :
42cm x 59.4cm : Marker on card
This image is the second of a series called Hands Of Christ on the Crucifixion & Resurrection theme which was completed during Easter of 2004. This piece was, as the name suggests, completed on Easter Saturday. Here, according to a medieval English tradition that tells of Jesus entering the world of the dead before the resurrection and harrowing the devil, we see Jesus's hands breaking the chains of the dead. We also see that the stigmata have opened on account of the compassion that Christ feels for the blessed dead. The text on the right, which in this photograph has been partially obscured reads: HALLOWED ARE YE, O MYSTERY OF ONE IN CHAINS WHO IS TRULY FREE, which refers to the idea that on Easter Saturday Christ was imprisoned in Hell but since the Resurrection was to occur, then it can be said at a deeper level he was truly free and not in chains at all. |
