Here then is the Crucifixion, not in symbolic form, but dominating the piece in a simple depiction. I have long felt that the Crucifixion was not merely the suffering of one man on one cross but a supreme act of sacrificial magic which transformed the entire world. I have often wished to depict Jesus not as a single man whimpering in pain, but as Christ the God almost leaping from or empowered by the cross on which he hung. I have tried to express something of this here.
