"SUNDAY"
2004 :
42cm x 59.4cm : Marker on card
This image is the final piece of a series called Hands Of Christ on the Crucifixion & Resurrection theme which was completed during Easter of 2004. This piece was, as the name suggests, completed on Easter Sunday. Christ's triumph is complete with the Resurrection. From his hands emanates waves of energy which carry life and blessings into the world. Notice also that his stigmata have changed into symbols of the Chi-Rho, which along with the fish (also shown here) was one of the oldest Christian symbols. The text at the right is in Greek: ΙΕΣΟΣ XΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΘΕΟΥ ΥΙΟΣ ΣΟΤΕΡ : Iesos Christos Theou Yios Soter : 'Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour', a traditional invocation in early Christian times (and still used in the Greek Orthodox Church today), the initials of which spell ΙXΘΥΣ : Ichthys : 'Fish'. Hence the early Christian symbolism of the fish. |
