In July 2007, I was commissioned by a tour company based in Israel's Negev Desert, to produce a series of works themed around the rock art and petroglyphic forms located throughout the Negev region, which occupies the southern half of the territory of Israel. This struck me as a very interesting project, and during the course of the project, exposure to these ancient artforms effectively initiated me into another archaic artistic tradition. |

A total of nine pieces were eventually produced, as well as four other developmental pieces. These are all visible by clicking on the links above. One of the most fascinating aspects of this project was being able to explore an artistic style which hitherto I had no knowledge of - I am very conversant in rock art from Europe and Africa to Australia and the Amazon, but Israeli and Middle Eastern rock art had escaped my studies until now. One of the biggest challenges was getting into a desert mindset and beginning to understand the changes in the seasons, and the tracks of the stars in the Negev sky. This commission was remotely completed - communication was via email, payment via PayPal and delivery of the art works was arranged by post. If you are internationally based and have a project in mind for me, I'd like you to know that I consider distance no obstacle at all, so please feel free to get in touch. |
