"SUMMER IN THE FOREST OF STYMPHALIA"
2007 : 42cm x 29cm : Inks & markers on card

This piece is inspired by a petroglyph suggestive of one of the Labours of Heracles - the killing of the Stymphalian Birds. We see the bronze clappers Heracles used to startle the birds, and the sound waves reverberating through the forest. This myth has a strongly celestial element to it which is only subtly suggested in this piece: the swan represents Cygnus, the eagle Aquila and the vulture Vega and the constellation of Lyra. We are thus looking into the summer sky, hence the title of the piece. For me, the format and composition in this piece is unique, using a dimension of realism (particularly in the vulture and swan) usually absent from my work. I suspect this piece will stand as a potential development for the future.
