"MINOTAUR"
1998 :
84.1cm x 118cm :
Inks, acrylics & markers on card
(Image was split in half in transit from Japan to U.K.)
This is one of what I consider to be my first original compositions - it's quite rough and ready and also quite raw, but I have quite a fondness for it. Sadly the piece has not aged well: it had to be split in half to bring it home from Japan, and it then spent two years tucked away at the back of a wardrobe gathering dust and dog-eared corners. Despite these imperfections, we can see the panicked Minotaur rinning through the labyrinth with a bleeding ankle. In some respects, it expresses the end of a World Age, in this case, the Age of Taurus. In other respects, it represents the death of mythological thinking - the Minotaur, along with many other subtle mythical symbols, is having to flee before the literal-mindedness of Abrahamic and secular thinking. |
