"THE SAMPO UNHINGED"
2006 : 59cm x 42cm : Inks & markers on card

This is the second of the Finnish Sampo images, expressing ideas of the World Mill. Here we see Vainamoinen, smith god Ilmarinen and shamanic magician Lemminkainen heading northwards in a boat to steal the Sampo. In the land of the north, Lemminkainen using magic and Vainamoinen sings to send the denizens to sleep, and they manage to unhinge the Sampo from the sky to take it away. However the crone of north, disguised as an eagle, gives chase and in their flight, the three heroes lose control of the Sampo, and it plunges into the bottom of the ocean where it continues to grind out time at the base of a whirlpool to this day. This complex story remembers a precessional event in the sky where one 'World Age' came to an end. Since an Age was ending, the Mill that whirled the sky became unhinged. A deeper analysis of these ideas can be found in the collection of essays The House Of The Sky. See also the images And The Sky Moves With The Sampo and She Is The World Mill.
