"PEYOTE SEED MOTHER"
2005 :
59.4cm x 84.1cm : Inks & markers on card
Among many Native American people from central Mexico to as far north as Canada, the peyote cactus is regarded as a sacred medicine and teacher. As well as being a plant which can give visions when ingested, it is also used as an anaesthetic and a salve for many types of digestive complaints, and as such it engenders deep respect among the people that grow it. I want to mix this respect with the Old European idea of the fertile Earth goddess. Thus we see that the body of the cactus itself has become the fertile goddess in trance and making magic for the cacti to be fertile. This image was in part created as a kind of magical invocation to get my cactuses to grow and be fertile. It seems to have worked. |
