"QUETZAL'S PROTECTION"
2007 : 42cm x 59cm : Inks & markers on card

Here again, another story of the ending of a World Age, but this time not from mythology but from history. Tecun Uman was the last independent ruler of the Quiche people of Guatemala and had tried unsuccessfully to hold back the advance of the Spanish conquistadores into his kingdom. He was slain by the bloodthirsty Pedro de Alvarado and of his death is told a rather beautiful if tragic legend. During his last battle, it is said Tecun Uman's nahual (spirit guide or ka) attempted to protect him from harm, but that when Alvarado had pierced Uman's chest, the bird flew down and stained its breast with the king's blood. Since that time all male quetzals have had red breasts. For me this sorrowful tale speaks of the defence of an old way of life and its attempt at survival despite overwhelming odds...
