"SHE IS THE WORLD MILL"
2005 :
84cm x 59cm : Inks & markers on card
A piece derived directly from the Hindu epic of creation, in which the Gods come together to churn the Ocean of Milk out of which is born the goddess Lakshmi. A serpent wraps itself around her to act as the turn for the mill embodied by lakshmi. Notice the reciprocating, back-and-forth technology of the mill here, which is also depicted in contemporary Hindu art of this scene. Such Neolithic technology is in opposition to modern mills with their continuous circular motion, and as such this image says something important about ancient man's expectation of the world - that reciprocity is the key to a good life (it takes two to mill the grain). Just like Lakshmi the World Mill, life comes flowing around again... |
