"UJI-KYO"
2007 : 59cm x 42cm : Inks & markers on card

This landscape is taken from an old memory of the river and hills around the city of Uji, Kyoto-fu, Japan where I lived for two years. It was in this landscape that i first decided to set myself on the path to becoming an artist and so it has a special quality for me. I have tried to depict both the ancient aspects of the riverscape and the modern city - we see shrines on the far side of the river but also a radio mast and a dam. In the foreground, a representation of the famous temple of Byodoin as a phoenix, and in the far right corner we see the distant Lake Biwa which is not visible from Uji City, but the river emerges from that lake and so it is important to me to depict it.
