"AVE"
2005: 59cm x 84cm : Inks, acrylics & markers on card

This piece remembers the awe-inspiring landscape of Avebury, Wiltshire. I was very fortunate to grow up near this world-class megalithic monument, and spent much of my childhood roaming around the sacred landscape in which it is situated. The circle in the centre represents the main Avebury stone circle, with two avenues leading southwest and soputheast leading to the Beckhampton cirlce and The Sanctuary respectively. Also visible here is Swallowhead Spring, the vaginal source of the River Kennet which against all expectation flows in summer but magically dries up in winter. Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow and Waden Hill are all visible towards the base of the image, and the Ridgeway, playing the Eye Game with Silbury Hill, can be seen coming down to the right. Of course, I realise, to those who are not as familiar with the Avebury landscape as I am, much of this will be meaningless. It is therefore a very personal piece deeply rooted in the landscape of my childhood...
