"SAN NAVICULAR"
2007 :
16cm x 11cm : Digital print on canvas
This piece is derived from San rock art in the Kalahari Desert which for many years was thought to depict a sea-going boat. This was a mystery to many since the Kalahari is far from the sea. However, when they asked the local San tribe what they thought, researchers were told that this image depicts a shamanic vision of the landscape, the repeating lines not being waves but shimmering lights on the edges of the vision. This particular image had a profound effect on me as I sometimes suffer from migraines: this type of circular shimmering is exactly what I see during the onset of the migraine. Through this experience I felt a connection across the years between myself and the artist who created the original rock art. |
