"XBALANQUE"
2007 :
30cm x 50cm : Digital print on cotton satin
Of all the mythical characters in Mesoamerican cultures, Xbalanque, the dark moonlit hero twin counterpart to bright Hunahpu, is the most alluring. throughout the myths he seems to a be contradictory character, being a Lord of Xibalba whilst at the same time being killed there, being a proud warrior whilst having a name that suggests womanhood (his classical name Yax Balam contains the element yax 'lady'). His half-jaguar, half-man form also strongly suggests the were-jaguar child statuettes of Olmec times, and so I feel Xbalanque has a very deep history indeed. |
