"THE MYSTERIOUS SEVEN MACAW"
2007 : 35cm x 50cm : Digital print on cotton satin

This image comes from an episode in the Popol Vuh, the great Quiche Mayan creation epic. Seven Macaw was a god who untruthfully boasted that he was the Creator of the world. On hearing this, the hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque took their revenge by shooting him out of his tree and silencing his lies. What struck me the most about this story was the idea that Seven Macaw might have been one of the old gods, or a deity from a previous World Age, now discredited in this version of the myth. Perhaps originally he was the Creator, but a new cult or belief system supplanted him. I felt that seven Macaw was not all that he seems in this story.
